A New Day Option
from September 2024
We are delighted to announce that we will be opening a Day House in September 2024.
For children who live locally, being a day pupil at Uppingham offers the perfect blend of a truly expansive and holistic education with the flexibility of going home every day.
Day pupils have the same outstanding educational experience as boarders - the same exceptional pastoral care, academic challenge and support, and life-enriching co-curricular opportunities - but return to their family home each evening.
We believe in the transformative power of education and are thrilled to be able to respond to local demand for a genuinely all-round education with the opening of our Day House.
THE DAY HOUSE
The Day House will be the pupils’ home from home with a host of supportive role models who will know the children very well.
The Day House’s family set-up is exactly the same as it is in our boarding houses - the only difference is that staff and pupils return to their homes at the end of the day.
Each house has a House Parent, supported by a Deputy House Parent, responsible for overseeing each pupil’s pastoral care, academic progress and co-curricular involvement in the School.
Every pupil is part of one of Uppingham's traditionally small tutor groups. Tutors join the House for lunch, supervise prep and regularly meet their tutees one-to-one.
Making sure there is always a friendly face to greet and support the children no matter what time of day, the Day House will have two matrons who play a key role in pupil welfare and pastoral care.
Together, they create a caring and supportive community with a strong sense of House identity.
Our architects are sensitively remodelling and re-purposing a beautiful Seventeenth Century building around Twenty-First Century children’s needs in readiness for September 2024.
The new Day House will be a place of friendship, care and encouragement. With welcoming and thoughtfully designed spaces to unwind, refuel, check-in with their house family, study, shower and store their essential things.
It is superbly located close to the heart of the main school campus, making it easy for pupils to return to it throughout the school day.
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Our day pupils have opportunities to enrich their lives and cultivate new talents, passions and interests unrivalled by day schools.
Their timetable is the same as the boarders during the day – a stimulating combination of lessons, sport and co-curricular activities.
During the week the school day begins at 08.15 with registration, with the Day House open from 07.30. Breakfast is available for early birds. Day pupils can choose to go home after lessons or stay into the early evening to make the most of all the opportunities available to them. The Day House closes at 19.00.
On Saturday, morning lessons are followed by an early lunch and a full sporting programme. The House will be open from 8.00 until 18.00, but day pupils may leave when their commitments have ended. On Sunday, day pupils are not expected at school unless there are organised activities or events, although these will only happen on a few occasions.
AN UPPINGHAMIAN FOR LIFE
The experiences, education and opportunities we provide create wonderfully bright, rounded, curious and engaged individuals who are well equipped for dynamic and fulfilling lives beyond school.
FOR THE INQUISITIVE
Academic ambition matters. Our pupils demand to be stimulated, challenged and inspired by their teachers.
In turn we want their academic education to be thought-provoking, intense and life-changing.
Outstanding exam grades are a by-product of our dedication to nurturing inquisitive, critical and enthusiastic learners. We help your child develop the right attitudes and skills so that exam results come naturally.
Nigel Breakwell will be the inaugural Housemaster of Uppingham’s first Day House, assuming the role from September 2024. Nigel is already well-known to Uppingham as a Business Studies teacher and tutor, as well as having supported his wife Christina in New House, one of our girls’ boarding houses, for many years.
Throughout his teaching career, Nigel has assumed various leadership positions in secondary academies, including Head of House, Head of Year, and most recently, Assistant Principal. His expertise in school leadership, gleaned from his extensive experience within School Extended Leadership Teams, has been insightful when supporting his wife in her role as Housemistress of New House.
Assistant Head: Pastoral
Rebecca Kay, Uppingham’s Assistant Head: Pastoral, is overseeing the introduction of the new Day House. She will be pivotal in the recruitment of the house team and will remain closely involved in the House as it opens and becomes established.
Rebecca Kay is a dedicated educator with a passion for fostering the growth and well-being of pupils. She joined Uppingham in 2021 after 15 years at The Forest School, a prominent day school in London. She joined Uppingham in 2021 after 15 years at The Forest School, a prominent day school in London, where she was a Housemistress for nine years, Head of Wellbeing, and acting Head of Lower School.
